Generating Ideas (P1,M1 U21)

P1(U21): Explain different ideas for an original media product based on a client brief
M1 (U21): Discuss strengths and weaknesses of the different ideas

Learning outcome 1 (U21) Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief

The Brief:

The Task:

My task is to create a music magazine based in north London the content is for both online and hard copy

The requirements are:

- to create an online and a print version (explicit)
- to make music magazine based in north London (explicit)
- The magazine is being produced because there is a vibrant music scene that a large audience need to know about and need a platform about it  (implicit)
-  I've been asked to make a front cover and double page spread (explicit)
- I've been asked to produce original content
- it has to target a large scale music scene that is rapidly rising

My first thoughts

- I could produce an artist based magazine that offers readers artists and music and new artists in north london

- I could also make a venue based magazine that offers readers advice and tips on local music venues in north London
- A third idea is Review based magazine which reviews music and gives the reader tips and names of new music and wether it is good or not

Three Key Ideas

Idea 1 = Grime magazine

The mood-board is grime because the people in it are big names in the grime scene and you cn tell this is grime because of what they are wearing and the settings such as tracksuits and in council estates there are the places grime was founded.

  Content
- advice and tips on new artists
- Competitions
- interviews
- news on the scene
-Adverts

Target audience
Gender
Race
Age
Class
Ethnicity
- men aged 15-25 (primary)
- Men aged 25-40 (secondary)
- Females 15-25 (third)

Price

- £2.50 cheap so it is accessible to people of all backgrounds and class. Also in order to target the audience (15-25), this is manageable for their disposable income.

Colour scheme

Black white and red because these colours connote the grime genre and are associated with grime. These colours are used because they connote grime such as black which is the main colour of  clothes people will be wearing on the grime scene

USP

- The unique selling point is the magazine will also act as a platform where the reader can submit music and they can win a chance to have their music signed. The main identity of the magazine will be to help struggling small artists get their music out there using the platform the magazine creates. with a QR code that when scanned will take you to the artist page on Spotify along with free Spotify with a subscription to the magazine

Strengths

- Grime is popular in north London
- there is a big market for magazines in the grime genre
- Grime is rapidly rising in popularity
- grime has become more mainstream meaning there is now a market for this genre.
- an online magazine will help attract a larger audience

Weakness

- Grime is still struggling with its image
- there is a large amount of people who don't like grime
- Grime main audience is younger people who are less likely to read a magazine
- Grime is considered too mainstream by some audiences, so a magazine about it might feel outdated
- Grime is a relatively new genre and it's unclear how popular it will be in years to come - it has no proven track record

Idea 2 = Grime venue based magazine

Content

introduction the the scene
the top venues in different areas
Q&A
Adverts

- men aged 15-25 (primary) (black people) stereotypically of the lower class
- Men aged 25-40 (secondary)
- Females 15-25 (third)

Price
- £2.50 cheap so it is accessible to people of all backgrounds and class. Also in order to target the audience (15-25), this is manageable for their disposable income.

Colour scheme

Black white and red because these colours connote the grime genre and are associated with grime. An example is black clothes are usually connoted with grime

USP

The USP will be a rating of each venue based on atmosphere, price and artists playing this will be used to evaluate each venue giving the reader a good understanding and idea of each venue with the pros and con of each

Strengths

- there are a lot of different venues, meaning lots of content for the magazine
- it will attract a large audience resulting in more profit
- it will inform and entertain the audience because they enjoy the genre
- there are a lot of people who live in north London meaning there will be a large readership

Weakness
-  there is a large part of the magazine which is opinion leading people to disagree with it
- it is aimed at the younger audience and a lot of them will not go to concerts - people of the 15-17 age range are technically too young to go to concerts alone (even though many do), so they may need to be accompanied by a parent. Many stipulate that if you are under 16, you must be with someone who is over 18. This depends on the venue
- Grime has had a lot of issues with their concerts and venues cancelling because of the image of the music
- Venues come and go quite frequently, so it may be difficult to get regular venues for the magazine. Also, management tends to change for venues, so establishing contacts might not be secure

Idea 3 = Review based music magazine

Content

introduction the the scene
the best artists of this genre
Q&A
Adverts
Reviews of the different artists with everything from the albums to the music and maybe even their clothes

An example is black clothes are usually connoted with grime as that is the fashion on the 'street'

USP

In each edition there will be a name and artist of ten songs and the readers is asked to log onto the website and vote on which is their favourite and to also enter competitions to meet their favourite artists

Strengths

- As the content will be inclusive for all readers, there is a high chance that it will be successful.
-There would be a greater active audience because readers will be able to provide their own opinions within the magazine and this results in endless content
- The magazine can form deals with different artists by contacting them to ensure that readers attend their gigs/concerts.

Weakness

- There are a lot of review magazines meaning that there is a lot of competition in the market. There would need to be a USP to spark an interest.
- Some readers may not like specific artists that are featured within the magazine, which could in turn lose a loyal fan base.
- Readers might disagree with the content being produced as it is quite opinion based.

In conclusion i am going to make a grime magazine based in north London. The base of the magazine is artist based and it will have a strong brand identity on helping struggling artists and giving them a platform. By doing this the magazine will be able to give back to its audience this it the USP which will help gain a larger audience.
